Businesses in Trades and Property Who Run Payroll with Us

Four trades and construction businesses, on handing payroll to a team that sorts it — not just software that runs it.

We knew that software alone is not enough - we needed the best operator too. Tempus was recommended by people whose opinion we take very seriously. It's reassuring to know that payroll is sorted and there's an entire team available when we need more. We get to talk to real people - not bots - who know our business and can give us a solution.

Aaron PringleDirector, Pringle Homes

Our business needed new payroll software, but Tempus took us one step further. We now use Tempus timeclocking which automatically feeds into timesheets for approval and payment. We thought that upgrading would be a lot of hard work, but the Tempus team made everything so easy. It's been a great move for my business and I would recommend them to any other business owner.

Lance O'SullivanDirector, Wexford Stables

Time is valuable for every member of my team; I want them doing what they're best at and what they enjoy. We gave our payroll to Tempus because they can do it faster and better than we could. One of the biggest reliefs is not having to worry whether my payroll person might call in sick. What I like most about Tempus is their approach: if we have a problem they'll get it sorted for us.

Matt CosseyDirector, Mr. Property Services

Like every trades business, we needed to solve a variety of challenges that come with paying our team. We had outsourced our payroll in the past but Tempus is a huge improvement. Tempus helps us with almost everything; from timesheets right through to complex deductions.

What Tends to Complicate It

Allowances that are not all the same thing. A vehicle allowance is usually taxable; a tool reimbursement usually is not. Once a few of these accumulate through custom and practice rather than through the agreement, it becomes difficult to say with confidence which is which.

Hours that vary by week and by site. Variable hours make the otherwise working day test a judgement rather than a lookup, and that judgement drives public holiday entitlement. Getting it wrong in either direction is a problem — underpay someone a public holiday, or hand out a day nobody was entitled to.

Subcontractors alongside employees. Two sets of obligations running through the same job, and a schedular payment regime that behaves quite differently from PAYE. The line between contractor and employee is not always where the paperwork puts it, and it is worth checking on your own terms.
